10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding DJ Before You Book

Your wedding DJ is the vendor most responsible for the energy of your entire reception. The right one keeps your dance floor packed and your timeline seamless. The wrong one can turn the most important night of your life into a stressful experience. Before you sign a contract, ask these 10 questions — and pay attention to how confidently the DJ answers each one.
1. Are you available, and will you personally be the DJ at my wedding?
This is the most important question of all. Some companies book dozens of weddings per weekend and subcontract to DJs you have never met. I personally DJ every Keep It Spinnin Entertainment event — when you book me, I am the one behind the decks. If a DJ cannot guarantee they will be personally present, that is a red flag.
2. How many weddings have you DJed?
Experience in live event work is irreplaceable. I have performed at over 1,000 events since 2010, including hundreds of Delaware weddings of every size, style, and cultural tradition. A DJ with 100+ weddings under their belt has seen and handled the unexpected — and that calm under pressure is exactly what you want on your wedding day.
3. What is included in your package?
Ask for a fully itemized breakdown. You should know exactly what you are paying for: hours of coverage, equipment type, lighting, MC services, ceremony coverage, and any add-ons. A transparent DJ welcomes this question. If the answer is vague, that vagueness will follow you all the way to your wedding day.
4. Do you carry backup equipment?
This is the question that separates professionals from hobbyists. A professional DJ carries redundant cables, a backup microphone, a backup audio source, and a plan for what happens if a piece of gear fails mid-event. If a DJ hesitates or cannot clearly explain their backup plan, that hesitation is a red flag you should not ignore.
5. How do you handle song requests?
The best DJs take requests in advance through a planning meeting, build a do-not-play list with you, and then manage live requests on the night with grace. I work with every couple to understand their must-play and do-not-play lists, then I filter live requests intelligently — playing crowd-pleasers that fit your vibe while gently declining anything that would kill the mood.
6. Do we have a pre-wedding planning meeting?
A planning meeting is where the real work happens. We discuss your timeline, your first dance, your bridal party introductions, your parent dances, and every transition that needs a cue. Couples who skip this meeting are the ones who feel their reception slipping off schedule. I include a planning meeting with every package because it is that important.
7. How do you read the crowd during the reception?
This is the art of DJing. A great DJ does not just play a pre-set list — they watch the room in real time and adjust. If a song is working, I ride it. If energy dips, I shift. If the dance floor clears, I know whether to pull a classic, a current hit, or a slow song to reset. After 1,000+ events, that instinct is second nature — but it is also the single thing couples tell me made their night unforgettable.
8. Can I see reviews or references?
Ask for past client references and check independent review platforms. Keep It Spinnin Entertainment is listed on The Knot and Yelp with an established track record across Delaware. Any professional DJ should be proud to point you to their reviews — and a DJ who cannot or will not is one to walk away from.
9. What is your backup plan if you cannot attend?
Life happens. Illness, emergencies, and the unexpected are real. A professional DJ has a network of trusted backup professionals who can step in with your timeline, your playlist, and your plan already prepared. Ask specifically: who is your backup, and how quickly can they be on site?
10. What makes you different from every other DJ I am considering?
This is the question that reveals whether a DJ has thought deeply about their craft. For me, the answer is simple: I treat your night as your night, not my showcase. I read the room instead of sticking to a rigid list. I serve as both DJ and MC so you do not need a separate emcee. And I bring 15+ years and 1,000+ events of experience to every single celebration.
If you are interviewing DJs, ask every one of these questions. Then call (302) 293-1524 and let me answer them for you in person — I welcome every one of them.
